Have You Cut Back On Salt Yet?

According to a new study reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, lowering the amount of salt you eat just a little, could have a huge impact on your health.

Consuming just 1/2 teaspoon less salt per day can substantially lower risk of heart attacks.  Although you may have cut back on the salt in your cooking or at the dinner table, 80% of the salt in your diet comes from packaged foods and restaurant foods.

You really need to make an effort to read food labels

and buy products that contain reduced sodium.  Be particularly aware of pasta sauces and frozen meals.  They are high in salt.

  • I know too much is bad for you but my palate has yet to adjust to no salt.  I have started to gravitate toward some reduced sodium products.  But I'm with Annie, salt makes things taste good.  How do you get around that?

  • Anything prepackaged is going to be high in sodium.  I agree with Yogi.  Make it yourself and control how much salt you put in it.

Although, I would not eliminate it entirely.  Salt makes things taste good.

  • Our household is leaning more and more toward whole foods and less on pre-packaged anything.  The more time I spend reading the ingredient and nutrition labels the more inclined I am to put it back and go home and make it myself.
