Wannabe

I admit to having loads of issues with food. However, I do believe there are significant health benefits to being vegetarian (sorry guys, vegan is just too extreme for me). My problem is that although I try to eat a wide variety of foods and stick to whole rather than processed, I find myself somewhat limited and always hungry.
I'm in another of my experimental phases to see if a switch to MOSTLY vegetarian makes any difference in how I feel. My knees (among other things) are really creaky. Physical therapy helped a lot but I'm currently in a "I don't want to exercise" phase and I'm letting myself be. I'm also in a testing mode here to see if I gain or lose weight from this change.
So here I go again. Vegetarian wannabe. Carnivore by nature. Who will win? Giving it a few weeks. Will let you know.

The Price of a Pig Out

I suppose this is the reason some experts advise against daily weighing. Annoying as it is sometimes, it really does keep me focused on the fact that I cannot eat anything I want, whenever I want.
A couple things to note. A day or two of unrestrained eating does result in overnight weight gain. Numbers never lie. However, to make the number go back down again, takes WEEKS!!!.
So, even if you limit yourself to weekly weighing or just go by how your clothes fit, it pays to keep this in mind.
You will do penance for your sins.

Stomach Hunger vs Mouth Hunger

Most of us experience what I call mouth hunger. I differs from true hunger in that it is mainly a desire to eat rather than a real need for food. We are trained from a young age to ingore the cues from our body and eat what we are given regardless of need. "Clean your plate, there are starving children in China", our mothers told us. We eat until it's gone and everyone is happy. Except of course, us when we have to go and lie down on the couch to "digest" because we are so full.
I grew up in a large Italian family and the big get-gethers requred massive amounts of food that in a "sit down" setting, came in waves. I learned early on how to eat in this environment without being sick when I got home. I still ended up being uncomfortably full. Flash forward and I still struggle with mouth hunger over stomach hunger. I want I want to eat because it's time, because it's there, because the amount left is too small to be leftover, because it tastes really good. Lifetime habits are really, really hard to break.
I have a policy about night-time snacking. I clean up and "close" the kitchen after dinner. I like to go to sleep light and feel skinny when I wake up. Again, a mind game but it works for me. Don't get me wrong I have times when my tummy is annoyingly rumbly and there is something in the fridge calling me. This is one time when my control is strong. I make myself go to sleep because I know when I wake up I will NOT be hungry. I am a believer in breakfast but sometimes I experiment to see how long it is between coffee and my "real" desire for food. If I'm listening to my stomach and not my mouth it can be a couple hours before my body becomes insistant. I usually don't wait that long for the simple reason that low blood sugar will make me crazy. I've also found that it's counter-productive to wait until you are "starving" for food because your (my) control is totally gone by that time.
So as usual, life is a continuous process of starting over. Here we go again. Put less food on a smaller plate and eat it slowly so you taste it. Listen to your stomach and not your mouth. If you can wait out that antsy "I want to eat" feelilng. You will find that you were satisfied after all.

I was reading yet another article about why we are fat. There are all kinds of genes in mice that cause them to be fat regardless of diet. Mice that are fed less live longer than mice that are allowed to eat unrestricted calories. Well that's all well and good but people don't cooperate the way the mice do. People just eat. Calorie restriction may lead to longevity but it takes a discipline that few of us have. (if we did, no one would be overweight.) Those genes and hormones that cause us to gain weight? Yes, they probably do have an effect on a person's body weight but looking at people who have successfully lost weight and kept it off; you find that the common denominator is portion control and exercise. Who knew?

If you knew what was in it....

I read a magazine article recently about the ingredients in fast foods. Needless to say, I was disturbed. You would think that chicken nuggets contained chicken and whatever ingredients are in the breading. Not so. The list of ingredients for the chicken made me cringe. Milkshake? Milk and ice cream, maybe a flavoring? Nah, long list of unpronouncable stuff.
My time in the grocery store is log because I spend too much time in the aisle reading the back of the box and then putting it back. I crave junk food just like anybody else. I can't always bring myself to buy it. Even breakfast cereal. This drives my husband and son crazy.
Learning the basics of how to cook is not hard. Foods that are trecherous in a restaurant can be made at home and be much healthier even if the ingredients are not entirely fat free or carb free or whatever your food fear is. Frying is not evil. When I do it at home, I know exactly what is in my food. It's tasty and satisfying and chemical free.
Funny how my mother understood this way before it became news. Our pantry did not have a lot of processed foods. The chips and soda that were there were for company. We were free to snack on the abundance of seasonal fresh fruit that was almost always in the house and most food was prepared from scratch. I did not taste a canned product until I was an adult.
We as consumers need to raise our voices and revolt against the food industry giants who would feed us all this garbage. If we refue to purchhase what they are offering they will be forced to change. I don't buy the "its to expensive" nonsense. It's just not convenient.
Rant over....

We are a country of bigness. Big houses, big cars, big people, big food. Our eyes, it seems, are bigger than our stomachs. Bigness is a perception of value for the dollar spent.
My husband will always go for the largest size as it is the better value. I on the other hand have come to a different view on the matter. When it comes to food at least I know myself well enough to know I will want to eat it all. The concept of saving half for later is a nice thought but not my reality. I usually opt to order the small; so if I eat it all, I at least feel less guilty about it while satifying the need for my tummy to be full.
People find my mind games somewhat amusing but these things work for me. Whatever keeps the numbers on the scale at reasonable range is good in my book.
I'm always interested in usable, real-life suggestions that I can incorporate into my self-imposed food rules. What works for you?

Why Can't I Get it Together?

So I've been home for about a month or so and school has started so I'm going to be getting back into a routine that is very familiar. I've decided my biggest problem is being in the house too long after I've completed my obligatory chores for the day. I can't just sit and watch TV or read a book without prowling around for a snack. Since I don't keep snacks in the house it makes it difficult. I end up eating a little bit of everything there is to eat. Knowing that I do this you'd think I'd have figured out a way to stop before I even start but that is not the case. My over riding common sense seems to go out the window with my desire to eat. I don't think I deprive myself all that much. I have certain off limits foods but that is not to say I never ever have them. I do eat ice cream. I do occasionally eat pasta, bread and rice. I try to make them selective times when I think they will do the least amount of damage. I'm starting to think I have 'alone' issues. Something about being by myself sends me to the fridge. Why? Even if the lightbulb goes off and I discover the reason behind this madness will it make it stop? Will I ever gain control over the monster?

I'm just back from a very long vacation and I'm trying to work myself back to where I was before I left. (about 5 pounds lighter, thank you very much).I know what my triggers are and you'd think I'd avoid them but somehow I keep being drawn back to my old bad habbits. Yes, I do wish there was a pill that would fix me but unfortunately there isn't so I need to get a grip.Always looking for a new take on the old common sense.

Clean Bill of Health

So I went for my mammogram last week. Sat around the radiology department for a couple hours while they looked at my films, decided that yes, they would do an ultrasound to check on the lumpiness in my left breast...waited around for another half hour or so until the nurse came back to say that everything was ok. Lumpiness was just fiberous tissues. No concern unless it bothers me or changes in some way....Official paper came in the mail to say I'm good for another year and don't forget they have my films for next time around....Was I worried while I waited? No, yes, no...Ok I admit, the worst case scenario did go through my head. But only for a minute....I'm a fretter just like anyone else but I believe in waiting until the fat lady sings. I believe in letting yourself run through whatever emotions come up. To let the bad feelings out is to purge the toxins from your body and soul...then you can move on.So, I'm moving on....

Mammogram - finally

I know, I know...I'm overdue. Finally went for my annual exam and pap. Made my appointment for the mammogram. Have my previous films to take with me....(changed radiologist again)...My sisters and I lost our mother to breast cancer. We are all proactive about screening and nag each other appropriately when it comes to getting this done. I'll go ahead and say it for all of us. WE HATE IT. As women we are accustomed to having regular medical exams. We don't like it any more than the guys (who tend to avoid them) do. For us it has become part of the routine of life. Mostly due to birth control, pregnancy and childbirth, etc. We fit it in between the dentist and grocery shopping.I'm only looking forward to being done for another year and hopefully being given a clean bill of health. And I can put it away and not think about it....for another year anyway.

Recent Study on the Effects of Exercise

Don't ask me where I read these things....I just seem to come across them at random while I scan the daily news. Anyway, I read an article recently about exercise and its effect on metabolism and fat burining. It seems that all the stuff we've been told about how intense aerobic exercise will make your body burn fat and then keep burining it for several hours after is not necessarily true. Now I don't recall the exact details but this was the jist that I came away with. They did go back however and make reference to the fact that people who have shed significant weight and kept it off attribute their success to daily exercise. What the heck are we supposed to make of all this? I can personally attest to the notion that exercise will help you maintain your weight. At a time in my life when I was participating in vigorous aerobic exercise I maintained a weight about 20 lb lower than what I weigh now. When I stopped exercising 4-5 days a week the weight creeped on and has been hell to get off.You are thinking the same thing I am...now what? Well, regardless of what any study might say, you can see with your eyes the effect of exercise on a person's body. Yes, it is all about calories in, calories out as far as weight loss goes. But, in order to eat successfuly and be fit, consistent exercise is key. Maybe it won't help you shed the weight but it will help keep it off. Maybe not by raising your metabilism but by keeping you aware of your body and what you put in it. That is my unofficial, unscientific, personal opinion.

On Eating Meat

I read an article in the Daily Beast about women who eat meat. Got me sort of ticked off. What is wrong with people? I was raised by immigrant parents who appreciated meat in any form because they did not have easy access to it growing up. I was taught how to clean a chicken and handle different meat products. (mostly because my mother believed a woman should know how to do these things). I know how my hamburger started out. In general I don't think a lot of animal protein is good for the body. Some is necessary but all meat and no plant foods is a recipe for disaster. If I was going to be a vegetarian this would be my motivation. Not because I'm concerned about animals. They were put on this earth for us. Animals eat other animals. We are the top of the food chain. Responsible farming and slaughter, yes that would be nice. In this age of mass production, I think we have missed the point. Bigger is not always better. (try telling that to my 'tim the tool man' husband).I am a proud omnivore. Veggies are great. Fruit is God's candy. At one time my favorite comment was 'the only animals in my house are in the freezer.' We've since gotten a dog and I fell in love but that's another story....ok. rant over. check out the article. www.thedailybeast.com

Thoughts About Menopause

I was reading a bit of Dr. Susan Love's Hormone and Menopause Book and found it somewhat re-assuring for my particular state of life.I am in what I believe to be peri-menoupause. My symptoms don't necessarily fall into the 'classic' category. But nonetheless, I feel the changes in my body and mind. Dr. Love states that every women's experience will be unique and just because the symptoms are not on chart does not mean that it isn't happening. This just reinforces how important it is to know your body and be comfortable in your own skin. The more you understand your own 'normal' state, the better you can identify things that are wrong and can be confident in stating what you need from your doctor. Gone are the days of being told it's all in your head.

Been reading a lot about sleep lately. Interesting takes....see links. I personally believe lack of sleep will make you suseptable to all kinds of illness. I think that naps are a good thing and if you don't have anything pressing to do on a Sunday afternoon, the best thing to do is take a nap. I guess I've gotten old. Don't care to stay up late anymore. Like to go to bed at the same time my son does. They say seven or eight hours is optimum but I think a solid nine feels the best. Don't you???Sleep can help prevent catching a coldhttp://www.boston.com/news/health/articles/2009/01/13/good_nights_sleep_may_prevent_a_cold_study_finds/Sleep is a bad habit, only need two hourshttp://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,774680,00.htmlIs Sleep good for the heart?http://abcnews.go.com/Health/HeartDiseaseNews/story?id=6525530&page=1

Happy New Year

I don't make resolutions. I do have some plans and goals for this year. I've seen actual progress in 2008 so I intend to be more focused in 2009. Yes, I want to lose some weight but I'm more interested in changing longstanding habits. Once I get the changes to become a part of me, the weight won't be an issue. I also have other things to work on besides my outward appearance. Anyway...happy new year to all and good luck with YOUR resolutions.

What do I want?

Sometimes I just want to eat something. Not necessarily because I'm hungry but I want something. I'm still working on what that is all about. In the times that I let myself eat whatever I want, whenever I want, I have discovered that the junk I just ate did not really satisfy me. So now I think twice before I break into the chips or cookies. Taking that moment or two to think about what it is that I really, really want saves me from regret later. Although it still leaves me prowling around for that perfect thing....What am I looking for???

Over a year ago I started an experiment on myself. I started deleting 'bad' things from my diet and changing my attitude about food in general. I attempted to motivate myself to do some sort of physical activity. I fell off the wagon a lot. I also learned a lot about myself.1. Potato chips sometimes call to me. But ultimately they don't satisfy me.2. I CAN be satisfied with a small plate of food.3. My tolerance for alcohol is not what it used to be (or ever was).So it continues to be an interesting and enlightening journey.

So seriously people, have you eaten this stuff lately? The commercials make it look so appetizing but reality is nowhere near that pretty. I admit to occasionally needing to ingest food from these places but I gave up the regular pit stop a long time ago. The indigestion I got from it is JUST NOT WORTH IT. And can we be honest? Like popcorn, the SMELL of fries is much more appealing than the actual taste.
