About Me

Mostly I like to laugh. I used to think maybe I should have a loftier ambition. Then, psychological research on how to increase life satisfaction (Positive Psychology) caught up with me. It turns out, I was right when I chose to laugh, to see what is right...not wrong, and to build my life on laughter, engagement, contribution, and my strengths.

Interests:
I live wide...in an extended family home with my husband who is disabled, my daughter and son-in-in law (both attorneys), and their three kids (14, 11 and 3.) It's both fun and wild! I love my three kids, three "bonus" kids, four in-law kids, eleven grandkids, my friends, and my work. I am passionate about politics! I also love to read, think, write, and transform the energy in room full of people. I use humor, stories, and great research-based ideas to show and educate how we can use tools to increase our resilience, become the C.E.O.'s of our lives, and choose to be identified by our positive reactions to life's events, rather than by the events themselves.

Activities:
Tennis has been my lifelong companion. I love the power I feel in my body and the clarity I feel in my mind when I run and "whack" the ball across the net. My professional speaking requires a lot of travel, but I also help my daughter and son in-law with the kids, get my nails done with my girlfriends, have fun with my husband, and baby sit grandkids all over North America! I also have an Internet radio show, "Nurturing the Nurturers: A Show for Leaders Who Care." (Find it at www.webtalkradio.net or on iTunes.) "Wisdom and Beyond with Dr. Teena Cahill" is my local Princeton TV show (on Verizon FIOS in central New Jersey). Both shows are fun conversations with interesting people.

Favorite books:
Authentic Happiness, Anatomy of Hope, Einstein, Washington's Crossing, Love Is Never Enough, Aging Well, Feeling Good, Supersonic Cowboys, ChickaChicka BoomBoom, and anything about Thomas the Tank Engine or Dora.

Favorite movies:
Mama Mia, Miss Congeniality, Legally Blond, Enchanted, My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and any other movie I get to see with my granddaughter. I also like The Notebook.

Favorite TV show:
Dr. Nancy...is there any other? Actually, I watch Morning Joe and Nightline, too. I don't actually know how to turn on the TV, but my husband or grandkids do it for me. Pathetic!

Favorite quotes:
"Whoever said it doesn't matter whether you win or lose probably lost." Martina Navratilova

"Show me a woman who doesn't feel guilty and I'll show you a man." Erica Jong

"When you're going through hell, keep going!" Winston Churchill

"Since feelings come first, he who listens to the syntax of things will never wholly kiss me." T.S. Eliot

"The wider our webs of connectedness, the higher we bounce." Me!

The other night my grandkids roasted marshmallows over a fire pit we have in back in the yard. I watched them laugh with delight as they grabbed the chocolate, marshmallows, and graham crackers -- while doing much finger licking -- and assembled their favorite dessert: s'mores. Suddenly I thought t...
